Say Yes to Live Training.
Often, I get asked why I am hyper-focused on the experience users of Technology. Over my past 25 years working in education. Many of those in K-12 and technical and corporate training. I believe that the BIGGEST thing organizations leave on the table is ensuring that users know how to use and understand why they should use the tools that are available. Often, leaders believe that their users do not need formal training or a communication plan. They rely on users to “figure it out” or use OnDemand (video) training services out there. Don’t get me wrong, there is a place for those, however they will never be 100% successful.
In the world of change that we live in, continuous learning and skill development are crucial. Video-based training has gained popularity due to its convenience, cost and accessibility. In-person technical training offers advantages that significantly enhance the user experience. Below, I will highlight from my experience why in-person training is superior.
Enhanced Engagement and Focus
One of the primary benefits of in-person training is the level of engagement it fosters. In a physical classroom setting or live virtual classroom, participants stay focused and are more attentive. The presence of a trainer and peers creates an environment that encourages active participation and minimizes distractions. With the use of prerecorded videos, participants will often multitask, skim the transcript or use AI tools to assist with the end of video knowledge checks. By developing focused training sessions, organizations and users of the technology will be immersed within the technology ensuring that they are able to follow along and connect with the trainer and peers.
Immediate Feedback and Clarification
In-person training allows for real-time interaction between trainers and participants. This feedback loop is invaluable for technical training, where complex concepts and hands-on practice are often involved. Learners can ask questions, seek clarification, and receive instant responses, ensuring they fully understand the material. This exchange is impossible to replicate in video-based training.
Hands-On Practice and Demonstrations
As mentioned above, technical training often involves hands-on activities that are best conducted in person. In a classroom setting, technical concepts can be demonstrated, guide through exercises, and help. This hands-on approach helps learners build confidence and competence in applying new skills. Video-based training leaves learners to figure things out on their own.
Adaptability and Connection
Quality trainers, such as Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs) will adapt their teaching methods to suit the needs of the group, organization or industry. Often, I will gauge the learners’ understanding through non-verbal cues and adjust the pace or approach accordingly. This level of personalization ensures that all participants are on the same page and can keep up with the material. Video-based training, with its one-size-fits-all approach, does not offer the same level of adjustment. If you have been to one of my sessions, I will often share personal anecdotes, use humor, and create relatable examples that makes learning more enjoyable. This experience helps with complex topics and makes the training experience more memorable.
Structured Active Participation
Live training encourages active participation through discussions, group activities, and hands-on exercises. This involvement helps participants understand the material and apply it in real-world scenarios. Dedicated sessions should provide a clear schedule, dedicated time for learning, and a distraction-free setting. This structure helps participants stay organized and committed to their training goals.
While video-based training offers convenience and accessibility, in-person technical training provides a richer, more engaging learning experience. Studies have shown that participants in live training sessions retain information at a significantly higher rate compared to those who only engage in video-based learning. According to a report by the Training Industry, retention rates for in-person training can be as high as 70%, whereas video-based training averages around 20-30%.
One example highlighting the return on investment (ROI) of live training comes from a Fortune 500 company that shifted from purely online training to a blended approach, incorporating live sessions. This company saw a 50% increase in employee scores, directly translating to a 20% improvement in productivity within six months. Additionally, the company reported a 30% reduction in errors and rework, leading to substantial cost savings.
As mentioned, live training fosters a collaborative learning environment where participants can engage in discussions, group activities, and hands-on exercises, further enhancing their understanding and application of the material. This interactive approach not only improves knowledge retention but also boosts employee morale and engagement, which are critical for long-term success.
Often times, I hear that the cost of a live training session is too expensive. However, consider the adoption of the number of e-learning portals out there; many organizations are paying for services that are not being utilized to their fullest potential. Investing in live training, paired with video content, leads to the highest satisfaction and the deepest learning and understanding of complex concepts.
